Daniel Brühl will play Baron Zemo in Captain America: Civil War.
A casting call posted on Movie Casting Call has revealed that the Rush star will appear in the second Marvel Studios sequel as the classic villain.
Captain America's enemy Baron Heinrich Zemo was a Nazi scientist who survived World War II.
His son - the better-known Baron Helmut Zemo - is a longstanding villain associated with the Masters of Evil and the Thunderbolts.
The casting call also confirms that the Superhuman Registration Act will be the cause of the rivalry between Captain America (Chris Evans) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr) in the Anthony and Joe Russo-directed film.
Brühl was first announced for the film in November, but his role was not previously revealed.
Mark Millar - the writer of the original Civil War comic - has said that he "couldn't be more relaxed" about the adaptation.
Brühl was recently seen in A Most Wanted Man.
Captain America: Civil War will be released on April 29, 2016 in the UK and May 6 in the US.
