lol I'm not getting married =P
I'm designing a wedding dress for my major design project this year, and I have a month till its due..
currently looking at what I've done so far with it.. i'm not sure if all that i've done is 'appealing' to the audience's eyes.... so help ^^;
my purpose: to design a wedding dress that combines both western and chinese culture into one garment. it will therefore reflect both cultures and also save money if this garment is worn... rather than buying a qipao AND a wedding dress.

My ORIGINAL design:
http://img121.imageshack is not allowed anymore.us/img121/8830/vectdesign014fw.jpg
*red because: its chinese??
*gold: above
*white: white wedding dress.. i wouldve preffered ivory actually -_- but that fabric didnt come in that colour T_T;

i understand that white is probably a funeral colour to chinese.. but with the amount of red+gold used, it would balance out. plus .. today asians where the white dress anyway.. i dont see how this would be any different...

altered:
http://i3.photobucke...na/DSC06137.jpg
http://i3.photobucke...na/DSC06138.jpg

*not doing bolero (cape thing) because it will be too much for the dress.. takes away its elegance/simplicity.. its a wedding dress!
*seperate neckpiece - chinese collar with the 'crazy swirls' on it as a western aspect.. - trying to combine cultures
(also features a jewlery design? the necklace.. going to use gold/red beads?..im not sure what beads yet ._.;; but itll be on a gold chain.. or should i use a dusty copper colour chain? more exotic..)
*godet/fishtail at back.. godet - western, chinese silk
*ribbon bow - the way its done is like an obi.. sorta.. but yeah ribbon bow is western, but added to this cultural dress..

what it looks like atm: [NOT COMPLETED yet]

Posted Image

I'm going to do some beading on it... and the drawing above you could prob tell where the beading will go.. you guys have any comments on that? i'm goign to do the first design, where the beads are slanted...

comments...
help ..how can i improve lol x_X o_o

your ViewS?? *below
I'm not too sure how to do the ribbon.. to have it gold, gold+red, or gold but red middle??..

DC =D
i like the gold+red better...
it kinda gives it more of an azn feeling with a touch of elegance too =D i like it... but the 2nd one isn't bad... plain gold isn't the best out of the 3 but still very lovely =D

I luv the design =D when it isfinished make sure u model it ^^ *nudge*

and i like your drawing the one that the bows have some fabrics dangling off, i think that gives it a more elegant and romantic-ish feel =D

good luck!!! ^^

thanks ^___^;;

i wont have ribbons dangling off the bow though as my drawing suggests.. coz i think it'll be too much for the back since i already have.. bow.. and the fishtail .. o.o not sure if i'll do something with chain/jewlery etc though ^^;

i honestly dont like t he bow on the back. I thnk its too puffy and too big for the back.. yew migh wanna iron out the bow a lito to make it a lito much flatter. if it was a lito flatter it would might look a bit better. like the other person said it does look like a kimino rather than a wedding dress. its all cuz of the bow though.. i think yew might wanna work on the bow a lito.. o.o" i hope im not too blunt DC..

Wow ... kind of good but agree that the butterfly bow is like too big .. a little bit smaller would make it much more nicer and i think gold+red is nicer 2 ... and maybe u could add some accesories on the neck so that it dont looks to plain ..... anyway i am not a professional but jus say out wat i think .... good luck :)

I just want to say that I love the original sketch for this. I think, however, that the actual garment's bow is much too large. Notice how even in your original drawing, the bow is smaller... I'm not saying that it should be AS small as the sketch, but since the bow is so large, the bride must have a tiny, tiny, tiny waist in order for it to look all right. Obi bows are good for making larger women thinner, but they tend to thicken thinner women like yourself. Also, without the sparkles you planned before, the gown is a little too plain, almost like a well-made cosplay costume, ^_^' I loved the detail sketches you did of that part of the gown, and I'm disappointed you won't be actually using them. I think it would, as ~Sw33tz~ said, make it look particularly romantic. My last suggestion is more of a question... would it be possible for you to make the fishtail flare out a little more? It would elongate the wearer's line, as well as add a touch of conservative sexiness (you know, in a mock, mini hourglass shape) to the outfit.

I don't mean to be too critical. As I said, I love the original sketch, so I have confidence that you can make this dress every bit as beautiful. "Make it work!," as Tim Gunn would say (do you watch Project Runway? :))

hmm.. the puffyness.. can be explained.. especially for the first pic, the red fabric in the middle has been fold several times.. coz its like some fabric remainder i havent used and didnt want to cut it out yet =S but it shouldned be so puffy once i make it a single layer o.O

as you can see the gold (3) isnt puffy..

hmm

yes its a bit short maybe? =( but then i might be wearing abit-too high heels.. o_o; it was meant to flow much more but i think we raised the fishtail a bit too high =s .. and the back of my dress isnt so flared out anymore coz it was originally the front.. [it seemed to fit my body better that way -.-;]

will shrinkin the bow =)
i'm designing a neck piece as you can see there ^^;

I guess i'll shrink the bow then.. and try to get it like:

I'll be the one modelling it.. and i dont think im that thin?? lol ._. not around my waist/hips atleast..
which detailed sketches are you reffering to? ^^; .. i'll see how the bow turn out.. i might leave the bow ends dangling off ..

sigh i've ran out of the fabric for fish tail ._.; and i dont think i have enough space at the end.. so its like a balanced approach.. coz each layer is like.. same distance o.o i'll try make some patterns though for another layer and see how it goes...

critics are what i hope to get more of.. so i'll improve my dress everyway possible ^___^ so im thankful =D

lol you're the 2nd person who commented about Project Runaway =O .. i live in aus.. so i dont think we receive that here ..

Oops, oops... that's the detail for the neckpiece. It's absolutely gorgeous! I guess I assumed it was the bowpiece since it's almost underneath a bow as well. It might be cute to do a repeating pattern... not sure... don't want too much of the same thing. But it'd be nice to give like a little "surprise" in the back like that.

By the way, I approve of the new bow! I think it's great. And it droops a little bit... but cutely, rather like your sketch. Already, you look thinner. (Pshh... if you're judging by, say, "WeiRu" standards, you're not thin, but who in the world is 88 pounds?!)

Good luck with the fishtail! I think it would be nicer with the little "pouf"/more of a fountain look, but don't lose sleep over it or anything.

Haha... I love Project Runway! It's a pity you don't get it in Australia. What kind of class are you doing this project for??

hello!

first of all, i think this is a fabulous design! i love that you're doing a east/west mixed design~ i've often though about it doing a white qipao for my wedding (well, you know, childish plans), but then my grandma would always yell at me for the bad luck of it all. lol!

then:

i'm with tammiest in design philosophy though! i'm kind of sad that you don't have enough fabric to make one more tier for the fish tail. i was kind of hoping it would be more like a train. what do you think about using the gold for it? then you could just have a little bit of gold peeking out at the bottom of the tail. it would tie in with the bow a bit. personally, i like the all gold bow (it seems like i'm the only one who does... ^O^;; ) the red + gold bow seems a little heavy to me and you've already got a lot going on in the back. but i still think the red+gold bow is quite nice!! (i'm of no help in this matter, i'm sorry! ^O^;;; )regardless of the colours though, like tammiest said, i like how you've tied the gold bow kind of droopily in that pic. it also gives a bit of a bustle effect that way and gives your bum a nice boost (not that you don't have a very nice figure already!).

as for the neck accessories, have you thought about just a mass of fine gold chain (or that dusty copper you were talking about) hanging straight down from the collar like a curtain... in kind of sharp V shape (with the longest chain (the point of the V) ending *just* at the bust line or a little higher?).

just throwing in an idea... (as if you needed more! haha)

anyways, sorry if i'm being too much of a busybody! ^^;;;;; i'm clearly watching too much Project Runway too! ^O^;;; (ps. it's up for d/l if you're into that kind of thing. ^_~)

lol i'd prob try keep the bow simple though .. the beading might make things abit too much =( I probably would repeat that 'crazy swirls' pattern on the waist band.. at the front i guess? so that it balances out with the collar =)

that new bow was actually the first bow i tied .. roughly by myself while wearing the dress X_x so the material was just.. yeah material, not cut up or anything.. and somehow acieved that look.. and now when i tried to get it droopy like that .. i dont know o_O doesnt work out.. but maybe coz i have a few folds rather than one.. but yeah i hope to get it looking like that too..

having said that, i think it is probably easier to achieve that look if i used the gold fabric since its much flexible compared to the oriental brocade hm =/ and dont want to loose the beauty of a bow..

lol i'm just worried about my bodyshape in the next 2-3 weeks ^^;; i have my trial exams coming up.. and currently preparing for it PLUS teacher wishes for us to finish it by the end of this week, which i doubt will happen =/.. and studying full on.. wont allow me to get much exercise o_o;; .. i hope i still fit in my dress ok after these 3 weeks ^^;;; - so who knows i would prob need to loose some sleep =I.. ima bit sleep deprived anyway so it wont hurt .. much ^^;

this is for Design Technology =) Major Project, part of sydney's education system.. design students are to create a major work in any field of design.. and yeah i chose to do this =)

lol i originally wanted to do this whole cross culture thing in white too ^^; coz i felt it might be a bit risky to have RED and WHITE.. since it contrasts alot tooo.. but I guess i took the risk o_o and fortunately i guess with the gold it doesnt make it tooo bad.

ah gold as the last tier... thats not a bad idea i guess... but first id have to try and make another pattern so it can fit in first lol x_x; sad thing is im kinda lacking some qualified fashion design help .. as in my teacher doesnt specialise in dress making etc. so its a bit hard =/
*i dont wish to buy more of the red fabric coz its quuite costly here in aus =S i got mine from sgpore ^^;; .. so the gold is still affordable..

its ok! i do welcome comments ^_^; and yeah we both share the same views lol, red+gold seems like too much going on at the back BUT it looks nice >.<; .. as you can see i've changed my mind twice so far ... this morning i said il do with red.. and now im saying il go with the gold o_o;... i should decide by tonight anyhow.. so i can work on it tmrw...

the goldchain idea sounds nice, and certainly different ^^ but i wish to keep that area as simple as possible and not too congested, i guess thats one reason to why i decided not to do the bolero ^^;

im still not sure what beads i should use though... pearls?? those crystals? or those big plastic/or whatever quality beads X_x

Just a few more pics =)~

i readjusted the bow abit [not final/sewn down] and left the end of the bow to drape.. and also samipi's suggestion of the gold train... though might be longer abit..

Posted Image

Oo wanna give me a brief outline on what Project Runaway is about ? ^^; I might be interested in watching if its related to fashion design hehe [i'm watching Tokyo Juliet too for that reason :P ]

anyway, i say stuff the sheer jacket thing, shoulers are nice, maybe get a nice silky white scarf :whatup:
i love the bow on it! it's cute, but hmm i agree the (bow is it?) bit above the waist needs to be a lot tighter, perhaps u can add those belt socket things and thread a nice ribbon through to tighten it up without having to undo all your sewing again :duh (ignore me if i don't know what i'm saying) it needs to be tight even if it kills u :P

anyway don't let it fail now, ur nearly there :lol?: and i wonder if any swarovski beads are going on it :harhar

hehe yeah the white shawl... see through material...
i actually really like the fact it is white and see through because... it is like the veil of the western wedding =D which is very pretti!

the chain... attact it to the bow? it will look too heavy or something though by then... or wear it as a necklace or something... =D hehe!

i like the newest pic. the one with some extra fabric dangling off...(i am so not technical...) hehe! =D how is TJ coming along? ^^

i'm totally eager to see the collar, btw. i keep checking back in this thread to see if you've posted any new pics! ^O^

so hmm... in the pic you posted with the gold underlayer and the bow with the ribbons hanging down... now i'm not so sure about the gold underlayer (even though i suggested it. lol!) is it starting to look Sailormoon-ish? (i'm sorry i'm adding to your stress!!! ^O^;;;;;;;; )

in the pic you posted from the front when you're wearing the shawl, the fishtail actually looks like a good length... so maybe you don't need to lengthen it at all?? sometimes it's the angle of the camera that makes all the difference.

anyway, i'm totally cheering for you over here!! go, DC, go!

(ps - Project Runway is a reality television show, it's a contest, kind of like American Idol (or Australian Idol if i'm going to be specific ^_~)) except that the contestants really must have some kind of fashion/sewing background in order to qualify. something like 13 designers get chosen through open auditions to be on the show. every "week" they're given a challenge and they have to design and make an outfit/dress/etc with certain time and budget constraints. it's quite fun to see the different interpretations of the challenges, i think. and it's super fun to see how clothes are actually constructed! ^O^)

lol sorry no new pics today ^^; i've sorta done my bow though.. i decided to go with the gold-red bow o_o but i discovered a new thing.. that the wearer can choose either side ^^; coz if u turn it the other way, it'll b gold =P and im gonna allow that to be possible =))

well the underlayer probably doesnt look as 'good' in that pic since i just snuck some fabric in.. but yeah i still decide to test it, and get the rippling effect going alike the upper tiers =) .. i like the idea though, coz then my dress is more balanced out ^^; coz you see, at the front i still have some space at the end to join up the extra tier too.. then when i wear my heels, it'll be just right ^^;

*lol sailormoon how cute .. i wont make the bow ends dangle off too much.. so its abit short =) and yah... i still have to bead the waistband, and my beads wont arrive in the mail till end of the week =/ and i have exams next 2 weeks, so will have to take a break from this >_< but i'm going to ask my mum/sis to help me do some beading ^^; *aims to get the collar done this week =P and bead it later hehe.

the fishtail in that pic.. isactually just pinned on =/ and its in a diff fabric, which became the underlayer of my current one to give it more flow... and that fishtail was pinned below the near, where as the pic in the first post, the fishtail is sewn below my bottom =/ so thats why.. sigh i ddnt notice when i did that X_x; coz i asked someone to mark it for me =I lol .. but i do appreciate the gold =)

Ooo Project Runaway sounds cool xD i'm dwlding it atm =P ... are you guys up to season 3 now ? =/ well i found a season 1 bulk download... but theres also season 3 i think o.o;

I like the dual-option bow idea. Not sure if I like the red-gold idea for the bow myself, but I will withhold judgment... it could be charming, especially if you do go through (for sure) with the gold end of the fishtail... which I'm also unsure about. It's a pretty sudden transition... although, of course, the added balance and length is nice. Anyway, I'm just waiting for more pics, LOL!

Yeah, we're up to Season Three now for Project Runway... it's airing as we speak. Personally, I love Season 2... Season 1's winner really annoyed me. He's a pompous, flittery sort of fellow. And I didn't like his designs, <_< Haha... if you can find Season 2, get that one!! I'm so anxious for you to like the show, LOL!

now im just thinking about the beading on the white part of my dress..

ive decided to have like .. a 'lot' of it .. that starts scattered heavily from the bottom .. and eventually it fades as it goes upways?..

i dont think you would 'sew' these on??.. any suggestions? i'm not really an expert with beads =x ..

instead of just beads...how about a mix of glitter and beads on the white part of the dress. then you will have like different sizes of materials and it wun be as bulgy( i mean the beading) . the fading out part seems pretty cool..but i have a suggestion. i don't know if you will like it tho. at the back of your dress, maybe you cud get a sheer gold fabric, and let it flow starting from the bow.

I don't have too many suggestions about the beading but ... that is a realllly nice dress. I'm glad you did away with the "cape" like thing. I was about to mention that it didn't really suit with a wedding dress, but you're already one step ahead of me. As for the bow, I'm not really too fond of it. It kind of "stands out too much, and doesn't really add to the elegance. But actually, I'm quit fond of the red knub with the gold bow, or like the smaller red bow in the golden bow, it sort of ties the whole dress together =] Hope you get a good grade!

It looks really beautiful Clarissa ^^
I think it definitely looks better now than the original design with the bolero thing o_O
I'm quite confused about the beads though..have you got a specific design you want to construct using the beads? Or are you asking for ideas about that? x.x

Your dress looks very pretty. A job well done! When is this project due?

Some of my suggestions but I am not really good a fashion.

1) I don't like the collar. I think you should make it smaller or something. It doesn't look nice on you since you're the one modeling your dress. I am not being mean or anything but it looks like you have a short neck. In the pix of you in the collar in the mirror in front, I can't see your neck at all. The collar looks very beautiful in back view but not in front view.

2) If you decide to use the collar, make the strings of beads a little bit longer, maybe to where it touches the dress. Those short little strings annoy me a little bit.

3) Make the strings of the bow a little bit longer. I feel it is a little short.

Oh, and if you have the time, give some design (like using lace pattern) on the front of your dress, the white part. It looks a little plain to me.

Hope you get a good grade on this project. And yes, I can see the Eastern and Western blending. Bravo for a job well done once again.

wow! after all that work~~ the end result, it looks great!! i think the collar may have been a bit too big on you, but overall, the dress is super fabulous. and the photos are amazing! totally something you'd see in a magazine~~

wow. o___o
a lil speechless at your creation
however i noticed a lil boo boo.
the bodice [red part] has a lil too much excessive fabric?
or atleast that is what it looks like to me, because its sorta gathering up
its really obvious in the first proish photo
=]
