Ever since as a child I have been speaking cantonese at home. And then Swedish when I started school. I only know how to speak cantonese, not how to read or write. Even though I have been taking chinese class. ^_^'

WTF. I can actually contend that cantonese people tend to be weaker in other languages besides English, because the British origins in the Honk Kong area still remain strong. Otherwise, mandarin speaking people are just as strong at other languages because they come from an impoverished background when immigrating to other countries (usually the immigrants are the only true "multilingual" people). Some may actually use this point and relate the work ethic it generates to argue even further for Mandarin speaking people. I am a mandarin speaker and I find myself perfectly sufficient in English. I also take Spanish. In fact, I'm pretty sure most successful multilingual businessmen and PHD's predominantly speak Mandarin, since it is the so-called "official" language of China.

However, overall, I'm not saying Mandarin is better than Cantonese or vice versa. I just feel that an irrational comment like this should definately be refuted.
