On Wednesday it was announced that a sequel to 2012’s smash hit film Thermae Romae is in production. It’s also been revealed that the main cast of the first film will be returning; including Hiroshi Abe, Aya Ueto, Kazuki Kitamura, Riki Takeuchi, Kai Shishido, Takashi Sasano, Masachika Ichimura, etc.
Thermae Romae was released last April 28 on 304 screens and earned a record 432 million yen in the opening weekend with 325,000 tickets sold. It maintained a steady pace a the box office and went on to earn 5,980,000,000 yen (over $65 million USD).
The first movie starred Abe as an ancient Roman bath house architect named Lucious who “time slipped” forward to the present day where he met an aspiring manga artist named Mami (Ueto) and used his newfound knowledge of modern innovations from the Japanese people (who he refers to as the “flat-face tribe”) to gain fame and success in his own era.
Director Hideki Takeuchi will return for the sequel, which promises a significant increase in scale over the original. This will be the first Japanese production to shoot in Bulgaria and they’ll be building a full-scale replica of the Roman Colosseum, which is a pivotal location for the plot of the sequel.
Filming will begin this spring. Around that time, the production will hold the “First National Flat-face Competition” to pick a man over the age of 60 from the general public to appear in the movie. Application information has already been posted on the film’s official website.
Thermae Romae 2 will be release in Japan during Golden Week 2014.
